Proponents hail these systems as objective, efficient, and grounded in rational data analysis. Yet a growing body of critique suggests that AI-driven decision processes often mirror the Kafkaesque absurdities of bureaucracy depicted in Franz Kafka’s literature. In Kafka’s The Trial, for example, an accused man grapples with an opaque, unchallengeable tribunal, facing anonymous decision-makers and endless procedures he cannot comprehend or confront. Similarly, individuals today find themselves subject to inscrutable algorithmic judgments—be it a predictive policing model flagging them as a threat or an automated ethics filter blocking their content—without clear explanation or human recourse. This report presents an academic-style critique of how AI systems, particularly predictive policing algorithms and heuristic ethical alignment mechanisms, reproduce and even amplify Kafkaesque bureaucratic absurdities. It will examine how a “hawkish” safety ideology underpins these systems, reinforcing procedural alienation, moral detachment, and the diffusion of responsibility. Drawing on AI ethics, legal theory, political philosophy, and Kafka’s own insights, we analyze real-world examples and explore the existential, political, and ethical implications of delegating decision-making to ostensibly objective algorithms.
Kafka’s works have become a byword for absurd bureaucracy: labyrinthine procedures, faceless authorities, and citizens left perplexed and powerless.
